Alabama QB Ty Simpson Marks First Time Only One QB Was Invited To The NFL Draft Since 2010 NFL Draft
Alabama QB Ty Simpson Marks First Time Only One QB Was Invited To The NFL Draft Since 2010 NFL Draft What started out as an NFL Draft that featured two and perhaps three quarterbacks invited to Pittsburgh, wound up being just one. For the first time since the 2010 NFL Draft in New York (which this NFL vlogger covered) Alabama QB Ty Simpson is the only QB invited to attend the show that is the NFL Draft onsite. The last QB to have that distinction was Oklahoma QB Sam Bradford, and for the 2010 NFL Draft in New York, the NFL Draft stage got bigger. It was the first time the NFL Draft was broadcast in prime time, yet only Sam Bradford (because he was in New York) and Tim Tebow (because he was drafted by the Denver Broncos), were the signal callers talked about on Draft Night. In those days, new media was still a new concept, and livestreaming was used by a few organizations, including Zennie62Media for the NFL Draft, starting in 2007. Since then, getting more than one quarterback has been the production focus of every NFL Draft, with two, and at times three top QBs on the marquee for the NFL’s other big event. In fact, the very next year,2011, brought a made-for-the-NFL Draft QB battle between Auburn’s Heisman Trophy Winner and National Champion Cam Newton and Missouri's QB Blaine Gabbert. Technically, it wasn’t a contest because the idea that Gabbert was more talented than Newton was the creation of racism in the media of the day. All kinds of lies were told about Cam Newton and Blaine Gabbert and in an attempt to devalue Cam and over-value Blaine. Ultimately, it did not work: Cam Newton was taken number one by the Carolina Panthers, and Blaine Gabbert, who believed he was the better choice, dropped to the 10th pick in the first round. And to add insult to injury, Washington’s Jake Locker was taken with the 8th pick by the Tennessee Titans, two spots over Gabbert. Blaine realized he wasn’t going to be the number one pick as early as the NFL Draft Red Carpet, and so when he did appear, he wore a notable scowl. Since then, the NFL Draft QB groupings were far less intense: 2012: Andrew Luck and RGIII 2013: EJ Manuel, Geno Smith 2014: Blake Bortles, Johnny Manziel, Teddy Bridgewater, In 2015, the NFL Draft was moved to Chicago, which became the first NFL City to host the Draft outside of New York City since 1964. Then, it was expected that Florida State’s National Champion and Heisman Trophy Winner Jameis Winston and Oregon's Marcus Mariotta would be in Chicago for that NFL Draft. Instead, Winton had his Draft Party at home in Alabama, and Mariotta had his at home in Hawaii. That left the 2015 NFL Draft with no signal caller on site. In 2016, the NFL Draft returned to Chicago, but with much less drama: Cal QB Jared Goff and North Dakota State’s Carson Wentz (who shared the same agent) were the only two QBs invited to the 2016 NFL Draft. In 2017, the NFL Draft moved to Philadelphia. There, North Carolina’s Mitchell Trubisky and Clemson’s Deshaun Watson were the star signal callers, but both took back-seats to eventual number one pick Myles Garrett who did not come to Philadelphia, and elected to remain at home. The 2018 NFL Draft was in Dallas, and gave us the largest number of quarterbacks ever invited to an NFL Draft: 4. Baker Mayfield, Sam Darnold, Josh Allen, Josh Rosen, and Lamar Jackson all attended the first NFL Draft in Arlington, Texas. In 2019, Nashville saw three top QBs accept invitations: Kyler Murray, Daniel Jones, and Drew Lock. 2020 was the Pandemic, so there was no onsite NFL Draft event held, it was virtual. Cleveland was the place for the 2021 NFL Draft. The QBs invited were Zach Wilson, Trey Lance, and Mac Jones. Again, three QBs. Las Vegas was the site for the 2022 NFL Draft, and while Malik Willis and Matt Corral were invited, but Corral did not come; he slid to the 3rd round that year. The 2023 NFL Draft in Kansas City featured three black quarterbacks invited to attend: a record. Alabama’s Bryce Young, Ohio State’s CJ. Stroud, and Florida’s Anthony Richardson came, and were all drafted 1,2, and 4 in stunning fashion. 2024, saw the NFL bring USC’s Caleb Williams, LSU’s Jayden Daniels, and North Carolina’s Drake Maye get invited to Detroit. The 2025 NFL Draft in Green Bay saw Miami’s Cam Ward, Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders, and Alabama’s Jalen Milroe attend. And that brings us to Ty Simpson as the only QB to be invited to the 2026 NFL Draft, and marks the first time that just one QB has ever been invited to attend the NFL Draft in the 21st Century. What does this say? It says that save for Fernado Mendoza, the group of quarterbacks coming out for this year is not considered good enough to be brought to the NFL Draft over other players. That’s what it says. And that includes Miami's Carson Beck. Wow.
