Las Vegas Raiders About To Be Owned By Dude With Name From Ghostbusters: Egon Durban
Las Vegas Raiders About To Be Owned By Dude With Name From Ghostbusters: Egon Durban Ever since the news that Egon Durban, the co-CEO of Silver Lake, the famed private equity firm, who is the focus of the Las Vegas Raiders succession plan as next-in-line to own the Silver and Black, there was something bugging this vlogger. The name Egon is unusual, but that was not it. Heck, Zennie Abraham’s not a normal name, either. So what was it? Then, it hit me: he’s got almost the same name as the character played by Harold Ramis, Egon Spengler, in the hit movie Ghostbusters. So, you have to wonder how much of Egon Spengler is in Egon Durban? Well, since Egon Spengler is considered a nerd, let’s start there. Guess what? Silver Lake peeps say Egon Durban is a "robotic word nerd" or a highly analytical "tech-focused" investor. Then, Egon Spengler is considered the brain behind the Ghostbusters and has designed and built nearly all of their equipment, including the Proton Pack and the Storage facility. But very much like his almost-name-sake, Egon Durban is considered the other brain behind the Twitter takeover that his business friend now Twitter owner Elon Musk pulled off. Egon Durban was a key ally and advisor to Elon Musk during the $44 billion acquisition of Twitter, though not solely the "mastermind". As a close associate, Durban helped facilitate the deal, with SEC filings highlighting his role in early conversations alongside Jack Dorsey. Key details regarding Durban's involvement: Close Ally: Durban, managing partner of private equity firm Silver Lake, has a long history of working with Musk, including the 2018 attempt to take Tesla private. Role in Takeover: Durban was on the Twitter board that approved the sale and was involved in discussions early in the process. Shareholder Reaction: Due to his close ties to Musk and his role in the deal, Twitter shareholders voted to remove Durban from the board in May 2022, though the board later rejected his resignation, calling him an "effective member". Disputed Role: While labeled a key ally, the takeover was primarily driven by Musk himself, who was later found to have misled investors regarding the deal. Silver Lake, under Durban, also worked on financing for the deal. So it’s clear Egon Durban has some Egon Spengler in him, and so very much deserves the name “Egon”. But the real question on the minds of Raiders Fans is “Is he a Raiders Fan”? In other words, does Egon Durban know “The Autumn Wind”? And given that he lives in Atherton, across the Bay from Oakland, has Mr. Durban attended a Raiders Game in Oakland, the home of Raiders DNA? That is the most important question of all, because it looks to more than a few Raiders Fans that the team is slowly becoming without a soul. Egon Durban came in as part of a financial plan to steer the NFL in the deep waters of the super expensive team world it created for itself. That says nothing about whether the Raiders will win. Also, slogans like “The Will to Win” and “Pride and Poise” and “Commitment to Excellence” have become texts of the past, not used and with no meaning to the current Raiders brass. So, Egon Durban certainly has a lot in common with a Hollywood character from a sci-fi-movie, but he’s got to prove he has the real-world understanding of how the Raiders won and a plan to keep them winning in the future. Unless he’s really just a place-holder for Elon Musk to take over The Raiders? Stay tuned.
