David Malmuth: Interview With The Man Who Built Ovation Hollywood, Home Of The Oscars, On San Diego And Oakland, And Saving California Cities David Malmuth is one of my all-time-favorite large scale mixed use developers. I originally met him via a cold call I made to him when I was Economic Advisor to Oakland Mayor Elihu Harris. Eager to rehabilitate Uptown Oakland, I managed to catch Mr. Malmuth while he was driving. He asked me to give him a quick explanation of why he should be involved in developing Uptown, and I did. He said, as I recall, "Well, I'm in the middle of building the new home of the Academy Awards, so if I can't get this done, let's talk." Well, he got it done. The development known as Holllywood and Highland and now Ovation Hollywood, has come to be an indelible part of American Culture. In so many ways, large and small, it has went from being a part of Hollywood, to defining it. Since then, Mr. Malmuth has been at the center of a number of iconic projects that "Creating art-inspired places that transform communities", and has something interesting going on in San Diego, which we will talk about. In total, David Malmuth studied psychology and philosophy at Claremont McKenna and business at Stanford, went into consulting, and then put what he learned to work in his true passion, real-estate development. Over the ensuing years, he served as VP-Marketing for McCarthy Building Companies in St. Louis and Newport Beach and Vice-President/ General Manager of Disney Development Company in Burbank where he led the renovation of New York City’s New Amsterdam Theatre. As Senior Vice President of TrizecHahn Development, he was the key executive directing the development of Hollywood and Highland and the Kodak Theatre complex. For seven years Malmuth was Managing Director of RCLCO Development Services Group. In 2010 Malmuth established his own firm, David Malmuth Development, LLC with a single focus: to lead in the creation of art-inspired places that transform communities. He is currently driving the entitlement process on second+pch in Long Beach and with his partner, Pete Garcia, is leading in the creation of the I.D.E.A. in San Diego.
