Academy Drops Black People In 20232024 Board of Governors Election After Oscars Black-Out - ATLNews

Well, here we go again, America. AMPAS, The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, managed to add zero new black actors or producers, and drop Whoopi Goldberg, and after an Academy Awards that saw no actor of African descent nominated for leading roles. Seems "Oscars (Still) So White" is extending to the new Board of Governors additions. On top of that, among the 20 acting nominees, Angela Bassett was the only Black woman nominated, for her supporting role in “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” but she lost to Jamie Lee Curtis. And Danielle Deadwyler of Till did not see the Best Actress finalist list and then-Academy Board member Whoopi Goldberg voiced her disappointment over the outcome. Now, she is not a board member. Here is what happened. On Thursday, AMPAS, The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, announced the election of the 2023–2024 Board of Governors. Joining re-elected governors Rob Bredow, Ava DuVernay, Linda Flowers, Lynette Howell Taylor, Stephen Rivkin, and Debra Zane, were new additions Wendy Aylsworth, David I. Dinerstein, Richard Gibbs, Jinko Gotoh, Kalina Ivanov, Simon Kilmurry, Hannah Minghella, Daniel Orlandi, Lou Diamond Phillips, Dana Stevens, and Mark P. Stoeckinger. while Ellen Kuras returns. From a diversity and inclusion perspective, while Lou Diamond Phillips becomes the first Filipino-American to be elected to The Academy Board of Directors, and Kalina Ivanov is the first Bulgarian-born governor, Black faces were not visible among any of the new governors.
