Oakland News Now Daily Jan 28th 2023: Mayor Thao Disses Oakland Exec LaTonda Simmons
This is the fifth edition of what is a daily video-blog in the tradition of Rocketboom and called Oakland News Now Daily with some Herb Caen mixed in. And since what Rocketboom was and who Herb Caen is (I prefer that to “was”), let's get started. First, my appology for unintentionally getting off a daily routine. I have had a health challenge that caused me to just get more rest; now that it's over, I am back in the saddle. ITEM It's January 28th, almost the end of the first month of 2023, and Oakland still has no replacement for the outgoing City Administrator Ed Reiskin. The name announced, Steven Falk (who was with Oakland before, two years ago) will not arrive until March. Talk about a leadership gap. ITEM During the search for a replacement for the outgoing City Administrator Ed Reiskin, Mayor Thao told Oakland Assistant City Administrator LaTonda Simmons that she “found someone with more experience” to replace Mr. Reiskin. LaTonda has logged 20 years and 8 months with the City of Oakland. Thao has not selected anyone who has more experience within the City of Oakland than LaTonda. Everyone who knows Oakland believes LaTonda should have been the next City Administrator after Ed Reiskin. ITEM Fitzgerald Park in Oakland City Council District Three has had someone shot in the face today, a possible homicide on Christmas Eve 2022, homicide on November 28th 2022, and is the focus of a Department of Justice investigation. If we're not going to close the park, then at least get some security down there, and pay for it as part of a tax increment financing program. ITEM Everytime there's a murder in Oakland, or now Mayor Thao's placement of Police Chief LeRonne Armstrong on leave, there's a public meeting of what to do. This habit started with The Pandemic. So far, none of these gatherings have led to an adopted solution. How about no meetings and more action? ITEM The Oakland Secret Film Festival is seeking submissions and the deadline is February 10th. The submissions must be at or less than 20 minutes long; anything over that will be rejected. Leigh Steinberg Talks 36th Leigh Steinberg Super Bowl Party, NFL QBs, Lamar Jackson, Jameis Winston
Leigh Steinberg Talks 36th Leigh Steinberg Super Bowl Party, NFL QBs, Lamar Jackson, Jameis Winston In our latest talk on Zennie62 YouTube, Leigh Steinberg and I look back on the first Leigh Steinberg Super Bowl . An event before my time in the sports media business, and in 1985 at his place located at 109 Panoramic Way in the Berkeley Hills and just walking distance from the UC Berkeley Campus. Leigh says his first party consisted mostly of sports writers and people in the business. They partied into the wee hours of the morning, and then Leigh said there were people sleeping all about his house. Eventually, the event grew to the point were the LA Super Bowl Party held at the Sony Studios Lot drew 4,000 people last year. Our talk then turned to what related events to expect at the 36th Leigh Steinberg Super Bowl Party, most notably the Brain Health Summit. That's an event within the party that annually focuses on advances in brain health. That is a subject he's keenly interested in as it impacts may of his NFL player clients. On that, I did ask him about what happened to Miami Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa, but Leigh said he preferred to leave that to the Dolphins to answer. After that, Leigh speculated on the futures of Lamar Jackson and Jameis Winston. Lamar his found puzzling because he believed he would have been signed by now. He also speculated that Lamar was looking for a $50 million a year price tag. On the matter of Saints QB Jameis Winston, Leigh said his future depends on which team he goes to, and because his performance varied from not so good under Bruce Arians in terms of interceptions to his best career throwing 14 TDs and just 3 INTs under Sean Payton with the Saints, and a mix of both under Head Coaches Lovie Smith and Dirk Koetter. Sheng Thao Retains Controversial Aide Brandon Harami Focus Of Powell And Webb Complants Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao released a statement on her new hires. Among them one name stuck out: Brandon Harami. This is what Thao’s office wrote: Brandon Harami, Policy Director Brandon is continuing his service for Mayor Thao after spending 4 years working as her Communications and then Policy Director in her Council Office. He is a native Californian who grew up just south of the Bay Area. Raised by is Gay dads and single mother, Brandon became active in politics at a young age. He learned leadership and community organizing as an officer in both his local 4-H club and his High School’s GSA. But to LeAna Powell, who filed a complaint that is now an investigation by The Oakland Public Ethics Commission, Brandon was a key player in an environment that she says was bullying. Powell shares that Harami and Chief of Staff Renia Webb were the ones who tried to get her to work on Sheng’s campaign for Mayor of Oakland. Then Renia Webb herself quit and then complained in an email seen by most city employees that she was abused physically and verbally. While Harami was not the person she blamed, Webb did later point a finger at Brandon’s office actions claiming that he made her sick. Powell advanced a similar complaint. On the flip side and before the campaign, Brandon was a top flight professional for Sheng. But given the complaints logged against him by Powell and Webb, it’s fair to wonder what kind of aide he’s going to be moving forward. Stay tuned.

Statement of Oakland Police Chief LeRonne Armstrong Response To Mayor Thao's Paid Leave Action Statement of Oakland Police Chief LeRonne Armstrong 1.23.23 I deserve to be reinstated as Chief of Police immediately by the City of Oakland. It is a matter of justice, due process, and fairness. It is also an issue of justice and fairness for the people and community of Oakland to have me at helm of the police department to protect public safety and provide leadership and stability to our officers. I want the public to know I followed all policies, protocols, and procedures in the two incidents that are detailed in the recently-released summary report. In the first incident, where an officer hit and damaged a parked vehicle in a garage, we took action against that officer and disciplined him. In the second incident—in which the same officer discharged his weapon in an elevator—OPD had begun an investigation following every policy and procedure. We had begun both administrative and criminal investigations when the officer admitted to us that he was responsible for discharging the firearm. I placed that officer on administrative leave one day after his admission. But neither the department—nor myself as Chief—ever had the opportunity to take full and appropriate disciplinary action against the officer because the Federal Monitor Robert Warshaw took the investigation out of my hands so that he could handle it himself. Therefore, the ability to discipline that officer and engage in due process was never afforded to me or OPD. I believe that I am in this position because Federal Monitor Robert Warshaw acted in his own clear self-interest. He did not act appropriately nor honestly in his role as Monitor. Instead, as Oakland neared the end of its monitorship after demonstrating sustained compliance under my leadership as Chief, Mr. Warshaw acted in the interest of his own pocketbook by manufacturing a false crisis to justify extending his lucrative monitoring contract. I should be reinstated immediately in the interests of justice, due process, and the safety and well-being being of Oakland community members and police officers. Stay tuned.

Why An Oakland Police Report Of A Bumblng Cop Was Really A Hit Job On LaRonne Armstrong Oakland Police Chief LaRonne Armstrong is the victim of a high tech hit job. Oakland's a mess and it's not going to get better. Why? Because we have the appearance of Oakland employees at high levels setting other valuable Oakland employees at high levels to take a fall that costs them there job, starting with “paid leave”. Why? Well, so those Oakland employees at high levels can take over the jobs of the valuable Oakland employees at high levels they managed to get rid of. How else to explain a report of a completely bumbling Oakland Police Officer many in a position to know have reached out on their own, and without my proding, to tell me is named Michael Chung. And how elese to explain that those sources point the accusatory finger at decorated Deputy Chief Angelica Mendoza? How else to explain how Officer Michael Chung's bumbling – first by running into a parked car while driving his OPD officer girlfriend to parts unknown, then by pretending to conduct target practice in a freight elevator at OPD Headquarters, only to accidentally shoot off his revolver – became an instrument used against Chief Armstrong? How else to explain that sources tell me DC Mendoza is supposed to be Chief Armstrong’s trusted agent to review these cases and yet she did not disagree with the investigation? If you look at the previous organizational charts, Deputy Chief Angelica Mendoza was arguably next in line to be Chief of Oakland Police behnd Anne Kirkpatrick. Sergeant Chung stops for a while, then drives away. Later, City of Oakland Police gets a bill from an auto insurance company for damages.the OPD Internal Affairs Division (IAD) gets all civil claims against the Dept. IAD reportedly realizes it’s a city car, but no report is made. The IAD commander realizes the sergeant is a friend and advises him to make an official collision report and he does. The IAD case is handled as a regular accident as the hit and run part is omitted from the initial IAD report. Allegedly the IAD commander influenced the IAD investigator to omit certain things and the case goes away. It should be noted that the IAD commander has a boss and that Boss is Deputy Chief Mendoza – and who is the “whistle blower” on this case. Dems And GOP Congress Must Make Big Tech Platform Shadow Banning Of Content Creators Illegal As the 2023 Congress takes up Big Tech, one action that must stop is called “shadow banning”. It is defined in Wikipedia as: Shadow banning, also called stealth banning, hellbanning, ghost banning and comment ghosting, is the practice of blocking or partially blocking a user or the user's content from some areas of an online community in such a way that the ban is not readily apparent to the user, regardless of whether the action is taken by an individual or an algorithm. For example, shadow-banned comments posted to a blog or media website will not be visible to other users accessing the site. This is done for overt political and personal reasons but the cover reason is a fake technical stew of words claiming the content is not “quality”. Why what definition is never explained. That can allow racism and sexism to creep in. Note that we’re talking about content that is not offensive, as opposed to words or photos that are obviously law-breakingly objectionable. Any content that falls into normal information format must be shown. That must be an enforced law. The content should also have a flag to signal that it must be promoted if it looks like it’s being hidden or banned. The platform owner must then promote that content publicly for one day. I can see a rolling set of titles. This should be done for all social media sites and search engines regardless of size. Shadow banning must be made illegal. Stay tuned.

YouTube star Keenan Cahill has died. He was 27. According to multiple reports, Cahill died on Thursday following complications from open heart surgery. Ahead of the procedure, he told fans, ‘Wish me luck,’ on Instagram. As a baby, he was diagnosed with a rare genetic disorder, Maroteaux–Lamy syndrome. Cahill was best known for his lip-sync videos with celebrities, including 50 Cent, Britney Spears, Ariana Grande and Justin Bieber.

Oakland News Now Daily Jan 15 2023: Oakland Flooding, Can Sheng Thao Lead?
This is the first edition of what is a daily video-blog in the tradition of Rocketboom and called Oakland News Now Daily with some Herb Caen mixed in. What's Rocketboom? It was a three-to-five minute video-blog series that launched in 2005 and posted once a week featuring whatever news its creators Amanda Congdon and Andrew Michael Barron believed was important. It was the first of its kind and marked the emergence of video-blogging, or what we now call vlogging as an industry. Now if you have to ask who Herb Caen is, or was, that's too bad, but understandable given the passage of time. Herb Caen was the main daily columnist for the San Francisco Chronicle, and famous for a form of writing he created called “three dot journalism”. Each “item” was typed below three dots. Anyway, by the time I was old enough to be aware of him, which was 1976 in Oakland, a mention in Mr. Caen's column meant you were doing something good, bad, funny, or just interesting. Later, like around the So, in honor of that style, I'll preface each part of Oakland News Now Daily with one simple word: item. ITEM Zennie Abraham is a blogger, not a journalist. In other words, I'm not the arbiter of all truth, and I come with an expressed bias and a bite. Plus, I change my mind from time to time, and I'll let you know why. I also hate labels like “conservative” “liberal” and “progressive” and I have noticed that the decline of American society has been in direct proportion to the need for one to idenfity themselves as “conservative” “liberal” or “progressive”, rather than have an original thought. ITEM Oakland flooding has caused the closure of the Oakland ZOO, a number of streets to be underwater, and all together a lot of damage, but is anyone with the City of Oakland recording the problem? Where's Sheng Thao other than standing behind a screen in the emergency services room for a photo op? Is there a City of Oakland “Oakland Flood” website where Oaklanders can report problems and get help? Sure, there's 311, and the normal “report problems” place, but given the magnitude of the storm, don't you think something specific is needed? Oh, and what about employing tax increment financing to get some money in Oakland to help folks fix the Oakland Flood problems? Mayor Thao was big on talking about it during the campaign, but now that she's Mayor of Oakland, she's gone silent. ITEM Will Mayor Sheng Thao's partner and from my personal experience all-around good guy Andre remember not to yell at the Mayor out loud in front of people in public – or in private? ITEM A parking ticket in Oakland is north of $100 now. That's a good percentage of someone's grocery money – like all of it. Can't the City drop the ticket fee by 50 percent and not gouge folks? ITEM In her Inauguration Speech, Oakland Mayor Thao mentioned Oakland in the 1920s as if our city was the seat of all racism. Obviously Sheng never heard of Oakland resident Earl Warren, who, as Alameda County District Attorney in 1930, demolished the local KKK. Oakland's current reputation as a true place for people of all colors didn't happen overnight – it was built by people like Earl Warren. Mayor Thao, know your Oakland history. Oh, and yeah, Earl Warren was later appointed to the Supreme Court. ITEM Yes, as I vlog this, I'm in Fayette County, Georgia, helping my 88-year-old Mom while still keeping my place in Oakland (no mean trick) and once again, North Georgia has been haunted by tornados. Mom and I are safe, but the folks who need help are the ones who lost their entire homes last week. Folks like Valerie Joslin – she and her husband lost their home of 20 years. So, if you're able, go to GoFundMe.com, search “Georgia tornado” and help out. ITEM The Alameda County Board of Supervisors voted to recount the votes cast in the November 8th Election. Fine, but when does the recount process starts? And what happens if Loren Taylor wins? I'm told he would have to go to court to get Sheng, as they say, “up out of that seat” - and she would certainly file a legal challenge to that. Would they get a judge who didn't vote for one or the other? What a mess. ITEM Oakland Raiders Owner and once Oaklander Mark Davis said that he's upset that the crowds at Allegiant Stadium are mostly dressed in the colors of the opposing team, like the Kansas City Chiefs, and remarked that it's not like it was in Oakland. Did Mark Davis just sound the call for The Raiders eventual return to Oakland? Last year Zennie62Media revealed that Oakland A's Officials paced by President Dave Kaval had met with Tropicana representatives for the past five months to that date, the focus of which was a mixed-use development that included a ballpark for the MLB organization. I remarked to anyone within earshot that it looked lke the Oakland A's copied the Howard Terminal tax increment financing model and brought it to Las Vegas. I had no concrete proof to back my claim, just circumstantial evidence. But now there's more news that brings the pitcture into clear focus. On November 16th 2022, a Nevada legislative bill called “ASSEMBLY BILL NO. 10” was introduced and according to the available documents “Authorizes the designation of a tax increment area for certain transportation and housing reinvestment purposes.” Now while that may not appear to have anything to do with a ballpark, keep in mind the new law allows a land use set up where the property tax from a privately financed ballpark would pay for affordable housing – much like what the still-not-created Howard Terminal Enhanced Infrastructure Financing District in Oakland is supposed to do. The 20-page legislative work calls for the allowancve of the creation of a new tax increment financing zone such that any land or structure within the area has its property tax collected by Clark County and then placed into a “tax increment account”. The money from that account is to be used to retire bonds issued to pay for the specfic transportation or affordable housing (or both) development project. Save for the land use restrictions that Nevada legislation is very much like California law SB 293 Skinner, named for its author Nancy Skinner and signed into law by California Governor Gavin Newsom October 11th 2019. That law was created by Skinner working with Oakland A's President Dave Kaval and Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf, and off of an idea I shared with Kaval on April 4th, 2017 during a scheduled 4 PM phone call. The Nevada law is necessary because standard tax increment financing rules don't allow for revenue collection to pay for affordable housing and transportation projects. The mixed use / ballpark development concept that has been under consideration in Las Vegas needed new legislation made that would allow that to happen. Enter AB10. Stay tuned.

Greenway Golf Associates, Inc. today announced that it has amicably resolved litigation with its former partner, Marc Logan. Greenway Golf Associates, Inc. is the manager and operator of Alameda’s Corica Park Golf Complex, a 333-acre municipal golf facility with two 18-hole courses, one 9-hole course, and driving range. The company holds a 40-year lease to operate the facilities with an additional 10-year renewal option. “We are pleased to have resolved the litigation with Mr. Logan,” said Umesh and Avani Patel of Oakland, Calif., who own Greenway. “We wish Mr. Logan well in his future endeavors.” The settlement clears the way for Greenway to complete the re-design of the much-anticipated North Course at Corica Park, the next step—after its acclaimed re-design of the South Course—to further elevate one of the nation's top municipal golf courses. Greenway will continue with improvements of the public space to benefit the community through high quality golf experience, socially inclusive programs and outreach, demonstrated environmental stewardship, and sound fiscal management. Mr. Patel said that Greenway expects to make a major announcement soon about its new design and construction team, which is slated to resume work on the North Course in 2023. The settlement also sharply undermines key tenets of the May 2022 lawsuit the City of Alameda filed against Greenway, which relied heavily on Mr. Logan’s now dismissed claims. “The City of Alameda unfortunately used the now amicably resolved dispute with Logan to file a baseless claim against Greenway and its management,” Mr. Patel said. A Superior Court ruling last month took issue with the City’s lawsuit against Greenway. Over the past two years, Greenway has initiated numerous community-enriching, no-cost programs, intended for golfers and non-golfers alike, in an effort to provide access and benefit to those who have had little or no access to Corica Park before. This new ethos has created opportunities for underserved youth, high school and college students, women and girls, local non-profits, small businesses, educators, and the community at large. Greenway Golf Associates, Inc. today announced that it has amicably resolved litigation with its former partner, Marc Logan. Greenway Golf Associates, Inc. is the manager and operator of Alameda’s Corica Park Golf Complex, a 333-acre municipal golf facility with two 18-hole courses, one 9-hole course, and driving range. The company holds a 40-year lease to operate the facilities with an additional 10-year renewal option. “We are pleased to have resolved the litigation with Mr. Logan,” said Umesh and Avani Patel of Oakland, Calif., who own Greenway. “We wish Mr. Logan well in his future endeavors.” The settlement clears the way for Greenway to complete the re-design of the much-anticipated North Course at Corica Park, the next step—after its acclaimed re-design of the South Course—to further elevate one of the nation's top municipal golf courses. Greenway will continue with improvements of the public space to benefit the community through high quality golf experience, socially inclusive programs and outreach, demonstrated environmental stewardship, and sound fiscal management. Mr. Patel said that Greenway expects to make a major announcement soon about its new design and construction team, which is slated to resume work on the North Course in 2023. The settlement also sharply undermines key tenets of the May 2022 lawsuit the City of Alameda filed against Greenway, which relied heavily on Mr. Logan’s now dismissed claims. “The City of Alameda unfortunately used the now amicably resolved dispute with Logan to file a baseless claim against Greenway and its management,” Mr. Patel said. I mention how if the County were using open-source software, members of the public could have spotted the County's misconfiguration of the RCV tabulator sooner. During this tour, the Lips would be behind a curtain during Beck's solo set. The curtain would drop when it was time for them to join in as Beck's backing band. It happens at 23:10 in this show.
