Sunisa Lee Gold Medal In 2021 Olympics Celebrated By Oakland’s Sheng Thao Fellow Hmong American Sheng Thao Oakland City Councilmember (District Four) sent a press release noting the Olympics gold medal win. Why? Well Sheng is also Hmong American. Sheng wrote: “Sunisa Lee has overcome so much to get where she is and is such an incredible inspiration to me and so many members of the Hmong community. I was brought to tears when I saw her win her gold medal,” explained Councilmember Sheng Thao, Suni’s win has ignited and brought together the whole Hmong community worldwide, and has truly put the Hmong people on the map; something we’ve been fighting for for generations.” The Hmong people are from Southern China and are considered underrepresented people. They were subjected to genocide in the 18th and 19th Century. Today there are only 171,000 people of Hmong ancestry in America.
