Social Media Is Divided Into Open Networkers And Digital Cocooners
Social Media Is Divided Into Open Networkers And Digital Cocooners Social Media today is divided into two camps, as I see it: open networkers and digital cocooners. The open networkers are people like myself, who may be Linkedin Open Networkers or something approaching that philosophy. The open networkers, or in Linkedin parlance "LIONS", connect with anyone located anywhere - they aren't concerned with whether they've actually met the person. The open networkers have giant sets of followers and connections not just on Linkedin, but on Twitter and Facebook, and other social media platforms. The advantage of this approach is the obvious ability to spread a message far and as wide as your social media friend, and their friends, allow. This approach emerged during the mid 2000s and is still in use today - except that it has a counter. That opposite are what I call the "Digital Cocooners". The Digital Cocooners only want to connect with a small set of people they claim to know or who are like minded. Their app of choice is less Facebook than it is a messaging app. And when they use Twitter, they tend to have small accounts with follower numbers far lower than the 208 account average - sometimes as small as three or five. They have a narrow interest and seldom, if ever, wander outside of that field. Digital Cocooners are bad for society. With every new platform that encourages private networking and not public sharing, we form a society where we don't listen to each other and develop impatience over the slightest differences in opinion. The only way to stop the continued growth of this society is to create the platform that is both the killer messaging app and the killer social media app all at the same time. Can we do it? We must.
