Black Male Oakland Uber Driver Says City Racially Divided
I just conducted another interview with an Oaklander on race, racial profiling, and our changing city. This man is from New York and has been here for six years. He says he has been racially profiled twice and each time when he had a woman in his car who looked white, even if they weren't. He wasn't ticketed for anything. To him, Oakland is, as he put it, "racially compartmentalized" where people don't mix as well as they do in New York City. Like some of the interviewees, his knowledge of Oakland politics and Mayor Libby Schaaf was minimal at best. He thought Jean Quan was still the Mayor and then when he remembered that Oakland had an election in 2014, said that Libby was "the one who supported cannabis - but I don't use it". Stay tuned.
