As a reminder, that happened because Sheng Thao, the 51st Mayor of Oakland, was recalled on Election Day 2024, meaning new Oakland Mayor Barbara Lee has to run for office again in 2026. But forgetting all that, Oakland Mayor Lee wants to have a big, expensive inauguration bash fit for the President on June 8th, and costing $300,000. Given Oakland’s woes, Mayor Lee should give that money to Jackie Simpkins, the Owner of The Alley Bar at 3325 Grand Avenue, and help keep it open. And went from there... Today, I got a call from a friend who's a big Barbara Lee booster - to say the least. She was more than a tad anquished over my comments. So, I explained what drove me to make the video: the cost to attend the event, the people who need help, and a call from my friend Jackie Simpkins, who owns The Alley Bar and Restaurant at 3325 Grand Avenue, asking for help. That gave me the idea of fusing the two subjects together in an effort to communicate Jackie's plight. And then there is the matter of tax increment financing. Oakland Mayor Barbara Lee Inauguration Committee Should Give That $300,000 To Save The Alley Bar On May 20th of 2025, Former Congresswoman Barbara Lee became Oakland’s 52nd Mayor, and what was to be a small in-office signing event turned into a City Hall Chambers ceremony attended by 400 people. As a reminder, that happened because Sheng Thao, the 51st Mayor of Oakland, was recalled on Election Day 2024, meaning new Mayor Barbara Lee has to run for office again in 2026. But forgetting all that, Oakland Mayor Lee wants to have a big, expensive inauguration bash fit for the President on June 8th, and costing $300,000. Given Oakland’s woes, Mayor Lee should give that money to Jackie Simpkins, the Owner of The Alley Bar at 3325 Grand Avenue, and help keep it open. Jackie needs the $300,000 because her building has depreciated by almost a million due to the crime in Oakland, making property values decrease. So, because of that, Jackie had to pay back her PPP loan of $250,000 which she had done with a balloon loan, but now she’s having trouble getting a loan to pay that off, because of the building’s depreciation. The Alley Is Another Oakland Business Still Suffering From The Pandemic This presents a problem not talked about: the fact that many Oakland businesses and residents did not gain the pandemic aid that was reported to have been given to them by what remains of the media. “I think there were about 50 of us or so who got into the class-action lawsuit,” Jackie said. “So I am just trying to find grants to pay back the balloon loan, before July 1st of this year. If Jackie can’t do that, her only option is to close the Alley because the bank is going to take it over. “I’ve applied for four loans, and all of the banks tell me they can’t do it because her building has depreciated so much,” Jackie said. That’s not to say that The Alley’s not doing well business wise, even if its not enough revenue to pay off the balloon loan in a timely fashion, “it’s been slow of late, and that’s because of graduation, but it will pick up. If Mayor Barbara Lee could help me get some of those grants, that would be great,” Jackie said. The grants Jackie’s referring to are from organizations like East Bay Community Foundation, which has the Oakland Small Business Resiliency Fund, and Direct Community Grants, but I pointed out to Jackie that those and other grants generally take longer to get than the July 1st deadline she’s facing. Jackie’s problem that could lead to the Alley’s closing needs immediate attention. As of this writing, it’s May 29th, 2025. The Oakland 2025 Inauguration Sponsorships start at a “low” of $500 and go up to $100,000. And what do you get for $500? One ticket and one reserved seat. And Oakland has a giant and growing homeless population, right? The Barbara Lee Inauguration Team should take that money they raise and give it to Jackie Simpkins so she can meet her July 2025 deadline, and then plan other inauguration parties around town just to make money for the businesses that have suffered due to Oakland’s high crime rates, and lack of economic development know-how. Every single share and donation makes a difference and helps me get closer to my goal. AmeriGas is gouging my Mom, and now threatening a disconnect, taking a tank they do not own, and all because the customer service "advocate" who claims to rep CEO Michael Sparks says Mom is unhappy with AmeriGas. Mom did not ask for a disconnect. So customer service "advocate" sends invoice for $330, which is high, but we can pay, (a year ago it was $159 for several months), days later $1,771. 81 (with the same 2/28 charge for $326 twice), then $3,973 just days later, all within the month of May 2025! So the money will go to pay that and then get a propane company, unless AmeriGas stops this abuse. Mom has been with AmeriGas for years, so all of this has been a nightmare! NFL Schedule Release News: 2025 NFL Schedule Released: Dates, Times, Channels Announced The NFL announced its 18-week, 272-game regular-season schedule for 2025, which kicks off on Thursday night, September 4, in Philadelphia and concludes with 16 division games in Week 18 – two on Saturday, January 3, and 14 on Sunday, January 4. Ivan Hernanez, Killer Of Victor McElhaney, The Son Of Former Oakland City Councilmember Lynette Gibson McElhaney Gets 35-To-Life. On March 11, 2019, I wrote this at Oakland News Now Blog: Victor McElhaney, the son of our beloved Oakland District Three Councilmember Lynette Gibson McElhaney, was killed in Los Angeles on Sunday, just after midnight. The person or persons who did this are still at large as of this writing. They must be found and brought to justice. According to reports, Victor McElhaney was in an area of Aams Boulevard and Maple Avenue, located east of the University of Southern California campus. ABC 7 LA wrote “Police say several suspects approached the victim in what appears to be a robbery attempt, fired at him and then fled the scene in a vehicle. The shooting happened just after midnight. He was transported to a local hospital in critical condition and later died.” CBS LA reports “Authorities said the shooting occurred in a parking lot at Adams Boulevard and Maple Avenue around 12:30 a.m. Three or four men approached McElhaney demanding money. One of the men shot the victim.” Now, how the LAPD came to know that “Three or four men approached McElhaney demanding money” is not known, but indicates that there’s a witness. Eventually, the killer, was found and apprehended. Ivan Hernandez, 29, pleaded no contest in January to first-degree murder in the March 10, 2019, killing of 21-year-old Victor McElhaney, whose mother was a member of the Oakland City Council. McElhaney was shot in the head just after midnight near Maple Avenue and Adams Boulevard and died at a hospital. The LA District Attorney reported the event in this way: District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman announced that a man pleaded no contest today to first-degree murder in the killing of University of Southern California student Victor McElhaney during an attempted robbery in March 2019. “This no contest plea ensures that the individual responsible for the senseless and tragic murder of Victor McElhaney will face the consequence of his actions,” District Attorney Hochman said. “Victor was a promising young 21-year old university student, a talented drummer and active member of USC’s Center for Black Cultural and Student Affairs, whose life was cut short by an act of pure violence. Our office will aggressively seek accountability for those who threaten the safety of our communities, and we will not tolerate such heinous crimes.” Ivan Hernandez (dob 12/7/95) also admitted he personally used a gun in case BA479107. The People are seeking a sentence of 35 years to life in prison. Sentencing was continued to April 30, 2025 in Dept. 104 of the Clara Shortridge Foltz Criminal Justice Center. On March 10, 2019, Hernandez fatally shot Victor McElhaney, 21, about a mile from the USC campus. The defendant was trying to rob the victim and a group of his friends. McElhaney was taken to a nearby hospital where he died. The case was prosecuted by trial Deputy District Attorney Brian Kang of the Major Crimes Division, under the leadership of John McKinney, Director of the Bureau of Specialized Prosecutions, and Head Deputy Craig Hum. The case was investigated by the Los Angeles Police Department’s Robbery-Homicide Division. That should not have happened to a young mad who was more than fulfilling his promise. Pierre Pierre suffered tragedy but the Oaklandside editor did not care. That person who shall not be named dispatched one of her writers to do the dirty work of reporting The Tribune Tower Landlord's claim that the eatery had not paid rent in over a year. Did Oaklandside treat Pierre Pierre as a casuality of Oakland's lack of economic development? Nope. Did Oaklandside bother to check if the white businesses they list as closed also did not pay rent? No. Oaklandside likes to make black businesss look bad. This is the second time the publication hit Pierre Pierre. The first time was 2023, when it reported the co-owner had a problem that turned out to be a domestic issue in Florida. Has zero to do with an Oakland Restaurant. Pierre Pierre suffered tragedy but the Oaklandside editor did not care. That person who shall not be named dispatched one of her writers to do the dirty work of reporting The Tribune Tower Landlord's claim that the eatery had not paid rent in over a year. Did Oaklandside treat Pierre Pierre as a casuality of Oakland's lack of economic development? Nope. Did Oaklandside bother to check if the white businesses they list as closed also did not pay rent? No. Oaklandside likes to make black businesss look bad. This is the second time the publication hit Pierre Pierre. The first time was 2023, when it reported the co-owner had a problem that turned out to be a domestic issue in Florida. Has zero to do with an Oakland Restaurant.
