Luka's Oakland Owners Bar Skula Will Be At Sidebar Restaurant Location - City Of Oakland Should Help According to Maria Alderete, one-half of the team who ran that staple of Oakland culture Luka's but were forced to close it because of the economic pressure of the Pandemic, have announced that they're planning a new eatery called Bar Skula and to be located at 522 Grand Avenue, most recently, the location of Sidebar Restaurant, which closed in January. Bar Skula would be the latest in a long-line of memorable restaurants to occupy that space. The one I really enjoyed was LePetit, which had the best Cassoulet I've ever had in my life. It was also, no surprise, a great date place, Friday night was couples night there. A visit to LePetit was a great way to see who had switched to whom, and just hope that it wasn't someone you believed you were with. Ah those were the days. Anyway, Maria's partner Rick Mitchell said to a media outlet “We’re definitely trying to balance something new with the classics that our customers want and expect. We don’t want people to be disappointed when they show up.” “It’s still a very difficult time for restaurants in Oakland… but we’re going to barrel through regardless,” And that gets to my point : the City of Oakland can help businesses and residents via the use of tax increment financing, just ask it has done in the past before Governor Jerry Brown stopped it in 2011. Jerry originally said that it was to cut the deficit, but later in 2020 said to KQED he did not like TIF being used to produce affordable housing. Now, we do not use it at all at a time when legislation allows us to apply TIF to help businesses and now fire stations. Alameda County Approves Oakland Coliseum Sale To AASEG / OAC An Inerview With Ray Bobbitt At its meeting on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, the Alameda County Board of Supervisors voted to finalize the deal to sell the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum to the Oakland Acquisition Company, LLC (OAC). Approval of these agreements bolsters the City of Oakland’s efforts to pursue robust economic development at the Coliseum property. This vote is a major milestone in the complicated and lengthy process to sell the Coliseum complex to one organization with the experience and expertise to redevelop and revitalize the property for the benefit of Oaklanders and residents of Alameda County. Now, the parties will work towards closing the deal and transferring ownership to OAC by June 30, 2026, concurrently with the City of Oakland’s timeline. Since 1997, this annual event at Comic-Con International at San Diego has been both a triumph and a mystery with unexpected panelists galore. With a possible surprise guest host, this year’s panelists include: Aisha Porter-Christie (Daredevil: Born Again, The Boys) Kevin Grevioux (Underworld, The Blue Marvel) Comedian Mr. Jay Washington (Netflix Is A Joke, American Gigolo) Artist Quinn McGowan (Project: Wildfire, Little Rock Files) Writer Hannibal Tabu (MPLS Sound, War Medicine, Fathom Sourcebook), also the panel’s co-producer Cartoonist Keithan Jones (The Power Knights, Black Comix Day) Writer MD Marie (Top Cow’s Vindication) TTRPG performer Rodney Campbell (Venture Forth) Comics anthropologist Dr. Stanford Carpenter (School of the Art Institute of Chicago, BCAF) Michael Davis — a co-founder of Milestone Comics and co-creator of the characters that became Static Shock — was unable to attend in 2024, leading to a “takeover” of the panel by luminaries such as screenwriter Akela Cooper, actors Malcolm Barrett, Eugene Byrd, and Damion Poitier, hosted by executive Dan Evans. Janani Ramachandran Interview: Welcoming The Hon Janani Ramachandran Oakland City Council District 4 Janani Ramachandran will join me to talk about the performing arts center, the controversy surrounding it, and the recent call for economic development ideas, and just plain catching up. Janani Ramachandran is a public interest attorney who has dedicated her life to empowering communities and fighting for responsive government institutions. Born and raised in the East Bay, Janani is the daughter of immigrants from small South Indian villages. She identifies as LGBTQ. Janani’s passion for justice was born at an early age. At 16, Janani founded a nonprofit that built libraries in under-resourced schools in her local community. She attended Stanford University, where she studied systems of democratic governance and economic development. Later, Janani worked as a home-visiting case manager at a community health clinic, serving pregnant mothers experiencing domestic violence and housing insecurity. Witnessing the injustices her clients faced at the hands of our inequitable legal system, she was driven to make a difference as a lawyer and attended Berkeley Law. While one of the more progressive LGBTQ political leaders in the Bay Area, Ramachandran also has proved to be a pragmatic politician unafraid to raise pointed questions about Oakland’s fiscal priorities and policies. She was a vocal critic of the plan to sell the city’s share in the Oakland Coliseum complex to the African American Sports Entertainment Group as a way to balance the budget last year, a $125 million sale that was supposed to be completed this May but was recently delayed to 2026. Over the winter, Ramachandran led the fight to reverse the city’s plans to close fire stations, several in her district in the Oakland Hills. In both policy fights, Ramachandran utilized her social media platforms to post videos of herself explaining the issue and expressing her positions on and critiques of the proposals to address it. Last November, she gave birth to a baby boy with her partner, Osage Edebiri. Of South Indian ancestry, her first name of Janani means “mother” in Sanskrit. The couple are both vocalists and perform together as the singing duo wish u were us; his stage name is Osagie the Great. Last August, while pregnant, Ramachandran was cast as a singing dancing nun in the musical “Sister Act” staged at Oakland's Joaquin Miller Park amphitheater as part of the long-running Woodminster Summer Musicals series. As the invite to her campaign kickoff promised “special guests, musical performances, and hors d’oeuvres,” guests got a chance to hear Ramachandran show off her musical chops.
