Chris Peeples AC Transit Board Member Interview On Oakland Civil Rights Lawyer Dan Siegel Oakland Resident Chris Peeples is a long-time friend going back to 1993 and was appointed by the AC Transit Board of Directors in November 1997 to fill one of the District’s two At Large Board positions and was elected in 1998 and re-elected in 2000, 2004, 2008, 2012, 2016 and 2020. Director Peeples, a longtime advocate for public transit, and AC Transit bus service in particular, has been actively involved in the AC Bus Riders Union, Alliance for AC Transit, Regional Alliance for Transit, Alliance for Sensible Transit, Coalition for A One Stop Terminal, and many other transit groups. He is also active in local community affairs, having served on the Oakland Ethics Commission, was a founding member of PANIL The Piedmont Avenue Neighborhood Improvement League, and other community and political bodies. In addition, he is active in the meetings of the Transportation Research Board (“TRB”), the branch of the National Academies involved in transportation research, and the American Public Transportation Association (“APTA”), transit’s national association. He is a strong supporter of AC Transit’s zero emission fuel cell bus program and has spoken at, and moderated panels at, national and international hydrogen and zero emission bus programs. This is my Las Vegas Athletics Stadium construction update taken on Monday, July 07, 2025. It's been a week since I was last here. You can see that they have put more rebar cages into the ground. They have put the tower crane base back into place after moving it a couple of weeks ago for what appears to be some kind of adjustment. It shouldn't be long before we see a tower crane getting installed. They have started to crush some of the dirt in the center of the field area. I don't know what they are doing with this dirt but thinking they will use it for something on site. Dan Siegel Oakland Civil Rights Lawyer RIP Dan Interviews On Running For Mayor, Occupy Oakland Dan Siegel, friend, civil rights lawyer of high regard, and Oakland politico, passed away July 2 after a battle with cancer. One thing I can say about Dan is he was a truly good man who cared about people. It showed in his conversations with you, with people, and running for office. Dan Siegel ran for office several times, but his 2014 Oakland Mayoral Run was his greatest political achievement. No, Dan did not win, my godsister Libby Schaaf did, but he was an apparent front runner for a while, and most importantly, was able to communicate his idea for a fair and just Oakland. Dan's other finest moment was just after Mayor Quan cleared Oakland City Hall of Occupy Oakland dwellers in it. It was next to impossible to get then-Oakland Mayor Jean Quan and her staff to decide who was going to make a statement. The scene when my camera was off was unfortunate, although Mayor Quan's daughter stepped in to calm the storm and got Dan to appear. As the video would show, he was candid. Dan, who was on Jean's staff as chief legal adviser, did not like Jean's decision, and quit her office November 15th, 2011. Dan is also best known for his work as a civil rights lawyer on the issue of the People's Park encampment in Berkeley. Former Oakland Councilmember Desley Brooks added these words about Dan Siegel: It’s hard to put into words the depth of the loss we’ve experienced with the passing of Dan Siegel. Oakland has lost a giant. The world has lost a relentless voice for justice. Dan was many things. He was a devoted husband, a proud father and grandfather, a brilliant legal mind, an unwavering progressive, and a fierce champion for the people. He lived his values openly and never backed down from a fight worth having. Whether he was taking on the University of California, the California prison system, or the City of Oakland, Dan stood firm with clarity, purpose, and unmatched skill. He had a mind like no other. Sharp, strategic, and deeply principled. But it wasn’t just his intellect that made him extraordinary. It was his heart. His belief in the dignity of every person. Ms. Phillips is an executive leader in government efficiency and accountability, with years of experience identifying financial waste, and advising elected officials on more effective and cost-efficient ways to execute public services and programming. Ms. Phillips spent the last year in Minneapolis as the Director of Civil Rights. Prior to that role she was appointed as the Inaugural Inspector General for the City of Oakland. During her time in Oakland, she set up the first independent civilian Office of the Inspector General, with a responsibility to monitor and audit the Oakland Police Department. Michelle Phillips joins Sofia Navarro who will assume the role of Interim Assistant City Administrator, a role she will hold through August 29. Ms. Navarro brings more than a decade of executive leadership experience across the nonprofit and public sectors, with a deep commitment to advancing equity, opportunity, and economic growth in the City of Oakland. John Russo Fmr Oakland, Alameda, Riverside, Irvine Official, On Zohran Mandani As New York Mayor What are we to think of the stunning turn of events? I turned to my good friend John Russo to ask that question. But who’s John Russo? Russo was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York and is the son of Italian immigrants. His father, a construction worker, and his mother, a dressmaker, moved to the United States from London in 1958 five months before he was born. Russo graduated cum laude from Yale University and earned his Juris Doctor from New York University School of Law. He worked two years at a legal aid office in St. Louis, Missouri before moving to Oakland in 1987, where he worked as a private attorney until 2000. Russo has been Riverside’s City Manager since May 4, 2015, with the council citing Russo’s legislative and executive management experience as well as his commitment to fiscal responsibility, responsiveness and transparency. Russo previously spent nearly four years as City Manager of Alameda and before that served as the City Attorney of Oakland for 11 years. Prior to being elected City Attorney in Oakland, Russo was a City Council member there for nearly six years. Russo served on the Oakland City Council from 1995-2000, where he authored Oakland’s open government law, known as the Sunshine Ordinance. He also served as Oakland City Attorney from 2000-2011 winning California Lawyer magazine’s “Lawyer of the Year Award” for Public Service in 2004. As city attorney, Russo created the Open Government Program, which ensured that citizens of Oakland have full access to information about their city and that the business of city government is conducted in the light of day. Russo’s passion for public service dates back to his childhood when he witnessed his father help their neighbors voice their needs to their city’s representative. His father often helped without ever earning any compensation. “My dad was like the go-between with all the city’s politicians and the politicians tried to help my dad because a single vote of confidence from him was worth 200 votes. I had always had the idea that I could be the guy on the other end of the phone that could make things happen,” Russo said. “Have I made wrong decisions? Sure, everyone does. We all make mistakes because we have imperfect information, we’re not always as mature as we should be or our emotions get the better of us. However, I can honestly say that I never made a wrong ethical decision.” John has the best political instincts around. You can hear that today. Now, just says after the end of TWD-DC Season Two, there's talk that Bruegel may be back from the dead. Why? Well, Screen Rant offered this take: While The Walking Dead's recent spinoffs have featured several good villains, Dead City season 2 introduced one of the franchise's best antagonists in years, and their death couldn't have been more perfect. Considering some of the zombie universe's biggest threats like Alpha and the Governor were only around for a handful of seasons, it's no surprise that The Walking Dead's spinoff villains don't tend to get a long tenure in the franchise. Most of them are only given a handful of episodes to make an impression, making it all the more impressive when one stands out as much as Bruegel. Played by Kim Coates, Bruegel made his debut in Dead City season 2's premiere, and despite not uttering a single word, he already appeared to be captivating. Throughout the following episodes, he only became more entertaining, but the evil faction leader was sadly killed off in Dead City season 2's ending. While it was certainly a little disappointing to see such a great character axed, it's hard to argue that Bruegel didn't have it coming after all the pain he'd caused, and The Walking Dead absolutely nailed his death, giving him the most fitting send-off imaginable. Or maybe its the actor Kim Coates who played Bruegel that is the reason for fans wanting his return? Kim Coates is best known for his role as Alexander "Tig" Trager in the FX series Sons of Anarchy and as Declan Gardiner in the Citytv series Bad Blood, as well as his recurring roles in Prison Break, Cold Case, CSI and CSI: Miami. He has also had film roles in The Last Boy Scout (1991), Bad Boys (1995), Black Hawk Down (2001), King of Sorrow (2007), the reinterpretation of Assault on Precinct 13 (2005), and Goon (2011). Kim's film career began in 1991 with The Last Boy Scout. Two Warner Brothers' hits followed: Innocent Blood and The Client. Since that time he has starred in over forty films, including Academy Award winners Black Hawk Down directed by Ridley Scott, and Pearl Harbor directed by Michael Bay. Other films include Waterworld and Open Range with Kevin Costner, Grilled with Ray Romano, Silent Hill opposite Sean Bean, Hostage with Bruce Willis, Assault on Precinct 13, Unforgettable, Skinwalkers, and Hero Wanted. Kim returned to Entourage for it's final season as Carl Ertz, the sleazy movie Producer. His performance garnered so much attention in previous seasons that Ertz's return was a direct request. He appeared in a recurring role on CSI Miami. Other prominent guest starring television roles include CSI, CSI NY, Cold Case, and Prison Break. He has had roles in more than 30 MOW's including the NBC miniseries Hercules, and Disney's Scream Team. These dramatic turns on television have earned him Gemini nominations for Best Actor in a Featured Supporting Role for HBO's Dead Silence and Best Performance in a Guest Role Dramatic Series for The Outer Limits. And before that, the A's tried to build a ballpark in Uptown Oakland, flirted with relocating to Fremont, were blocked from San Jose, and chased out of Jack London Square by a group of environmentalists headed by Vivian Kahn. But Howard Terminal was to be the final try. It was stalled by the City of Oakland's habit of working on its own time rather than on the developer's time. Eventually, Major League Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred established the option of Las Vegas relocation. But when the City of Oakland failed to finish the process of starting the tax increment financing district and with it, the needed subsidy that would cause new infrastructure to be built for the ballpark, Las Vegas became the preferred relocation choice. By April of 2023, as the City of Oakland produced a draft tax increment financing use plan, the Oakland A's were before the Nevada Legislature, putting the finishing touches on the Southern Nevada Tourism and Innovation District. The legislation that is the fiscal and political go-ahead with the Las Vegas Ballpark.
