Courtney Ruby Oakland City Auditor Is Leaving Oakland - Rumor Is Southwest Airlines Will Depart Too Courtney Ruby, who served a Oakland's two term City Auditor, just announced she is resigning effective immediately. She wrote: Dear Oaklanders, Today, I write you with sadness and gratitude in my heart. It has been a great honor to serve as your City Auditor for 13 years, and for personal and family reasons, I will be resigning from my position effective October 13th. This was not an easy decision to make, yet I feel it is the right decision for me and my family. As I step away, I could not be prouder of what my team and I have accomplished, and I could not be more excited about the future of the Auditor’s Office with our recently published Annual Work Plan, and the impactful work yet to come. In my stead, Assistant City Auditor Michael Houston will be leading the City Auditor’s Office. Michael has over 15 years of government auditing experience having previously worked at the San Jose City Auditor’s Office where he analyzed the efficiency and effectiveness of myriad city programs, and at Cal State University East Bay, where he directed the campus’ internal audit and investigation functions. He joined my team in 2019 as the Whistleblower Program Manager, a role in which he led investigations into allegations of fraud, waste, and abuse reported to the City Auditor’s Whistleblower Hotline. He was promoted to Assistant City Auditor in 2021. His current role assumes responsibility for the department’s operations in the absence of the City Auditor and he will manage the charter responsibilities of the City Auditor’s Office effective October 14, 2023, until a new Auditor is elected. While our audit and investigative work will be happening in the forefront, in the background, a series of steps will take place to permanently fill the vacant City Auditor position. According to the City Charter, when the elected City Auditor vacates their position, the City Council sets a special election to be held within 120 days and may extend the time period by up to 90 more days, if the election can be combined with a scheduled election. Michael and I are fortunate to lead an exceptional team of audit professionals and dedicated public servants. We anticipate limited impacts on the Office’s work during this transition, as we have built a stable foundation that is dependent on executing our work according to standards and leading practices. My personal and professional next steps include relocating to Southern California with my family, where I will begin working for the San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG) to lead its independent performance audit function, established by the California State Legislature in 2018. While I am excited about what this move will afford me and my family, I will deeply miss serving Oaklanders and working alongside so many amazing public servants – you will forever remain in my heart. In gratitude and always, Courtney I think Oakland is losing a good City Auditor, While she always gave the Oakland Coliseum a pass, overall, she did a good job of pointing out problems. But for Courtney to take this action means she's concerned about her kids and crime. Is Southwest Airlines Leaving Oakland Too? Word is that Oakand Mayor Sheng Thao held an emergency meeting over the word that Southwest Airlines is planning to leave Oakland. The reason is simple: crime. There's too much of it and it's to the point that flyers who come in and rent cars are immediately subject to smash and grab robberies that put extra costs and time on them. The City of Oakland is collapsing because its leadership is feckless. Period, end of story.

Gil Brandt, Dallas Cowboys Director Of Player Personnel, Died At 91, Friend, NFL Draft Pioneer, Part of The Dallas Organization When I became a Dallas Cowboys Fan starting in 1976 it wasn't just because of the flashy offense or the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders, it was because of the work of the quartet of men who made up what was called "The Dallas Organization". Clint Murchinson, Tex Schramm, Tom Landry, and Gil Brandt were team owner, president, head coach, and player personnel director, and each reflected the emerging corporate management process that made its advent in the 1960s. That was the birth of the computer revolution, and indeed, the personal computer was invented in 1962, the same year I was born. It was the decade that saw the United States overtake and wildly surpass The Soviet Union in The Space Race, and eventually put a man on the Moon. It was the same decade that launched the advertising workers that were what we now call "Mad Men", thanks to the popular TV show starring John Hamm. And it was known as a decade of process: system dynamics, Robert S. McNamara, and the development of modern management. It was reflected in the at work style of the day: suits and ties and hats for men, and long dresses with blouses and jackets for women. It was a period where we learned about having objectives and that we established goals to meet those objectives. All of that became part of the organizational makeup of the Dallas Cowboys. To better understand how the Cowboys came to be is to understand who these men were from a professional perspective, because to use any other point of view was to miss the point. All of the men - Clint Murchison, Tex Schramm, Tom Landry, and Gil Brandt - went to major colleges, with Murchinson earning a masters degree in math at MIT, Tom Landry earning an engineering degree from the University of Texas, and an master's degree in industrial engineering from The University of Houston, Schramm earning his journalism degree at the University of Texas, and Gil Brandt landing his education at the University of Wisconsin. In other words, all of the Dallas Cowboys managers learned a way of thinking that prized process and analytics. While its understood for Landry and Murchison, where the focus was engineering and math, it must be considered that journalism is a field based on the execution of a process of gathering information. And Gil Brandt's bent was analytics, and in his pursuit of a personnel job in football, first with the Los Angeles Rams, and then the Dallas Cowboys, his talent for seeing patterns of physical behavior that could be applied to a football team flourished. Gil's interest in what became computerized scouting was as much encouraged by the educational backgrounds of his business partners as his own desire to develop the approach. Thus, the Cowboys were a product of the 1960s Organization Man, and arguably, it's an approach completely lost on many of the NFL organizations of today. Computer analytics is given to interns and their role is just left of what we used to call "grunt work". Its no wonder many NFL football game plans are so very ill-considered compared to their 20th Century Counterparts. It also explains why Bill Walsh's West Coast Offense - very much the product of another person trained as an "organization man" - is still the premier offensive approach today. Indeed, such terms as "primary" and "secondary" receiver are a basic part of modern football today. That's why Gil Brandt's work has been of such importance to the National Football League. Brandt essentially created a kind of formal process way of evaluating football players and football talent that used the computer to, (again, that word) process information. After all of that, I will also miss Gil Brandt's warmth and friendship. He was always ready to share a view on teams or players or schemes, and delighted in talking about the glorious history of The Dallas Cowboys. He emerged from the carnage that was Jerry Jones' purchase of the Cowboys and sad the firing of the legendary Tom Landry, and did so unscathed. Not bad. Gil Brandt, Rest in Peace.

Rush & Associates Government Affairs and Consulting) has had quite the ride. David Downs, writing for the The East Bay Express had this take in "Leading labor organizer in the cannabis industry Dan Rush, says he is not guilty of federal charges.": Dan Rush, the long-time face of union efforts to organize America’s cannabis industry, pleaded not guilty Wednesday to federal charges of corruption, attempted extortion, and money laundering. Rush, an Oakland resident, faces up to twenty years in prison and fines of up to $500,000. A federal grand jury in Oakland indicted Rush on September 17 with charges of taking illegal payments as a union employee, honest services fraud, and other crimes. That indictment came after a bombshell affidavit in the case became unsealed in August. Rush was arrested on August 11 and posted bond for $500,000. The affidavit, and indictment contain a litany of charges. [jump] “Rush and a coconspirator formulated a scheme to obtain debt forgiveness in exchange for favorable treatment by the union,” authorities stated in public documents. “The indictment also charges Rush with taking kickbacks from an attorney to whom he had referred medical marijuana dispensaries as clients. Rush, the indictment alleges, had a duty to provide honest services to the UFCW; that duty including refraining from self-dealing when interacting with the marijuana dispensaries whose workers it was his job to organize.” Dan Rush was cannabis director for the United Food and Commercial Workers, and a major face of the legal pot movement in California and America. (While this vlogger does not smoke pot, I do defend the rights of others who want to.). Some refer to Dan as "Superman", others had less kind thing to say in print.
