Rumor: If Oakland Mayor Thao Is Recalled, Nikky Bas Will Resign Leaving Kevin Jenkins Interim Mayor - ATLNews

Rumor: If Oakland Mayor Thao Is Recalled, Nikky Bas Will Resign Leaving District 6 Councilmember Kevin Jenkins as Interim Mayor of Oakland. That's the hot rumor going around town and communicated at more than one party this week. If Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao is recalled (and that looks to be a certainty at this point), District Two Councilmember and President as is planning to resign to focus on her run for the Alameda County District Five Seat long-held by Keith Carson. The rumor goes that the Council would then have to select someone else to be Interim Mayor, and that Jenkins is the choice. Why? Well, D1's rep Dan Kalb would be retired, Bas in D2 gone, Carol Fife's future uncertain, as is true for Rebecca Kaplan and Treva Reid. But Jenkins is not up for re-election this time. So, the feeling is that the Council would have to select Jenkins. Thus, Kevin Jenkins would go from Peralta Community College Board Member in 2022 to Oakland City Council, to Mayor. A friend of mine with a deep City of Oakland history called Jenkins' rumored rise his "Head of State" moment. "Head of State" refers to the 2003 movie starring Chris Rock, and where the synopsis goes like this: "When a presidential candidate dies unexpectedly in the middle of the campaign, Washington, D.C. alderman Mays Gilliam is unexpectedly picked as his replacement." Stay tuned.
