Donald Trump's Presidential Announcement Speech Was Racist, Effective Donald Trump gave a speech that reminded me of the old Bullworth talk, given by the fictional character played by Warren Beatty. The only problem was Mr. Trump wasn't acting, he was serious. Trump's speech was by turns racist, crude, insulting, demogagic, and egomaniacal - the last one I have no problem with, as I am too. But I didn't like Donald Trump's racist blasts on Mexicans, saying that we (America) got the worst people. Many of those people are just trying to make a better life for themselves. The same as is true for the Irish waitresses who come over and stay illegally in America - but it's OK, because they're white. Trump has a 1980s us-versus-them view of the World and America, and it doesn't fly in this highly integrated, multi-lingual, tech world. He has the right idea about manuafacturing, but then no sold plan. And when he starts talking about one, Trump then moves off into one of his rants calling someone stupid, and even then he doesn't explain why. It comes off as ranting. Look, as one who loves the good life and has a soft spot for planners and builders, I do admire what Donald Trump has done in the area of real estate and entertainment. If he ads substance, and takes out the racism and conservatism, Trump could be a serious contender. Stay tuned.

When I first worked for the City of Oakland in 1987, the majority of department heads were black. That fact made it easier for African American business owners to at least be considered for city contracts. Today, the story is vastly different. So much so that Oakland City Councilmember Desley Brooks has created an idea for an Oakland Office of Race and Equity. The idea, to monitor City of Oakland contracts to make sure people of color, particularly blacks, are getting their fair share, is a good one. But there's one problem: California Proposition 209. If you remember California Proposition 209, it was the child of the movement of the late 1990s to push against affirmative action policies. Thanks to Republican Governor Pete Wilson, and a powerful group of Southern California lobbyists, conservative activists, and politicians, Prop 209 was created 17 years ago to block racial, ethnic and gender preferences in public education, public employment and public contracting. That's the area the Oakland Office of Race and Equity focuses on. My question is how does this Oakland Office of Race and Equity beat back a challenge from a lawsuit that would use Prop 209 as the basis for its attack? I'm not trying to kill Desley's plan at all, and given my own history with the City of Oakland, I do see the need for it. Raiders Stadium at 68,000 seats with 300 luxury boxes (expandable by 5,000 for a Super Bowl) 2. Retention and upgrade of the East Side of the Raiders Stadium / the rest new. 3. Oakland A's Stadium at 35,000 seats with 150 luxury boxes 4. 200,000 square feet of retail space between the stadium and Oracle Arena 5. A 1,010-room hotel complex that connects the Raiders and A's stadium (with provisions for a small set of condominiums). 6. Cost of $770 million for the Raiders Stadium, $500 million for the Oakland A's stadium, and with external retail a total cost of approximately $1.8 billion. 7. Formation of a 40-year industrial development lease revenue serial bond issue that would be let by the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum Joint Powers Authority. The JPA would serve as master developer; I have carved out a budget for the JPA to hire a developer / consultant. Plus, there is fiscal room for a hotel developer as well. To reiterate, I have not taken personal attack on Floyd Kephart of New City Development, but I have been in opposition to now just how this version of Coliseum City has unfolded, but insults toward Eric Grubman of the National Football League, as well as the focus on new housing, which has delayed the matter of forming a financing plan for a stadium for the Raiders, as well as the Oakland Athletics. I will not stand for harassment of me on the part of people who call themselves fans of the Raiders, but do not know the history of Coliseum City, which goes back to 2006. As one who's first job out of Berkeley planning grad school was with the Oakland Redevelopment Agency and on what was then called The Oakland Coliseum Survey Area, as one who made the first computer model around it, as one who was dispatched by Oakland Mayor Elihu Harris to build buyer teams to purchase the Oakland Athletics in 1997, and as one who formed the plan for the Coliseum to host the Super Bowl, and as one who built computer models of the Oakland A's and new stadium scenarios that students used around the country, I know a thing or three about how to do this.
